What to do with an old PC?

I have an old Gateway DX4-66 that is sitting around collecting dust. Do I just throw it in the skip or is there any charity or anything that may want it?

  • Think its actually breaking the law to throw it away. If you dont want to donate it you would have to pay for it to get disposed off corectly. So i advise you donate it to any charity shop.
  • Why is it breaking the law? I guess I could list it on Ebay for 5p.....
  • Just the parts should be disposed off correctly if not you could get a fine.
  • Don't forget to wipe the hard disk securely if you take it to the tip.

Well if it's not your skip it's fly-tipping! ;-) But assuming that you/your company hired skip it wouldn't be against the law (as you will have paid the skip owner to dispose of the contents correctly when they take it away).

  • As an electrical item charity shops probably won't be able to take it. It's also extremely old so I'm not sure it's a lot of use to those groups who do recycle PCs for reuse.

It's already European law, the UK is just extremely slow in implementing the law.
