Issue following oiling of kitchen worktop

Over the weeked I decided my Ikea wooden kitchen worktop needed a re-oil. I bought my house over a year ago and this was my first time doing this.

I applied a layer with a brush and left to soak in (I realise now I should have wiped off any excess after 15 mins)

4 days later and my surfaces still feel sticky and tacky. If I rub my hand over some of the surfaces the residue seems to rub off, almost as fine shavings.

Does anyone have any ideas on a solution?

There were no instructions on the can...

Though I know that a thin layer should be applied brush and then excess wiped off after 15 mins.

Unfortunately, I didn't do the latter which appears to be the source of the problem that I now have.

If it were me, I'd apply another coat and wipe off after 15 min. Make sure top is as clean as possible first.

What type of oil did you use?

Hopefully the only problem is the fact you didn't remove the excess properly.

Thanks....though if I have a residue with the current layer don't you think applying another coat will simply compound the issue?

I used Ikea's Behandla which was the recommended one for the surface.

I think that is the issue, that I used too much oil and did not wipe off the excess, but my question was how do I now solve it?

    Any ideas?

The only way to really solve this is to lightly sand ALL the affected areas. This will remove the excess oil and allow you to be able to re-oil.

When you do come to re-oil, use the type that you can rub in with a cloth, as this reduces the amount that actually goes onto the worktop...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Thanks, that is something I have considered as well.

I have read elsewhere that apply heat, such as a hair dryer on a low setting my help also. Any thoughts?

I never use a brush. I always rub my oil into the worktop with a cloth. Never had the problem you describe.

I'd try washing the residue off with soapy water then dry it with an old tea towel, then leave a couple of days until completely dry and then re-oil (wiping excess off after 15 minutes this time ;) )
