i need to put a new light switch on, and i have taken the old one off to have a look. the wires are brown and blue in the kitchen switch and red and black over the rest of the house... so are the red and the brown one the same as each other and the black and the blue the same?

new colors, brown - live. blue - neutral.

earth - green/yellow. no change.

Yes and no depending how its been wired up however - if there is only on cable at the switch then all you have there is a live and a switch wire. If you have a proper electrical tester the one which is live when the light is switched off should be in the COM terminal and the one that goes to the light ( switched live ) should be in the L1 terminal, the switched live wire should ideally have a flag of tape on it which should correspond to the same colour as the live wire.
