Choosing a solicitor - advice needed

We're selling our house and our EA has offered the services of their in-house solicitor for a fixed fee of £600, I don't know if that is a reasonable price or not.

Should I steer clear of a solicitor linked to the EA?

Also sorry to sound a bit stupid but do we use the same solicitor for both the sale of our old house and the buying of our new or should we do this separately?

As you can probably tell I'm very inexperienced with buying/selling property:o

When you first bought, was that solicitor ok ? Do you trust him? Go back there, at least for a quote. Unless double the cost, use them over the EA one.

I would never use an EA solicitor or mortgage advisor, on principle.

Use the same solicitor for both houses. He needs to progress both simultaneously.

Agree with this. Cost you've been given doesn't sound bad. We paid £575. However, the people who bought our house used the solicitor based at their EA offices and the advantage of that was that our EA could get regular updates from both their EA and solicitor in once go. Plus their EA could chase their solicitor as they were in the same building. As long as the quote from your joint EA / Solicitor is in line with others then don't rule it out for reasons stated above.
  • If you take a recommendation from EA or Mortgage broker, 9 times out of 10 it's because they're earning out of it. That goes straight on top of your bill.

Find your own solicitor. Local and independent are a good bet.
    I'm an estate agent. :j
  • Whatever you do, DO NOT USE TWO DIFFERENT SOLICITORS if you want to synchronise your sale and purchase - it causes extra work and winds both of them up no end.

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.

always reject the solicitor recommended by national estate agents. ALWAYS.

local estate agents who trade on their reputation know the good ones in the Town, so I would listen to them.

yes, use the same solicitor for sale and purchase
My posts are just my opinions and are not offered as legal advice - though I consider them darn fine opinions none the less.:cool2:

My bad spelling...well I rush type these opinions on my own time, so sorry, but they are free.:o
