I've got an addiction, I need help!

  • As an ex-chocoholic, I understand! The sugar, caffeine & theobromine in chocolate are physically addictive, and once your body becomes habituated to them, it'll continue to crave more. If you can force yourself to go cold turkey for at least a week or two, your body will have a chance to get it out of the system, and you'll probably find that the cravings disappear or at least decrease significantly.

Of course addictions have a psychological component too, but it's difficult to know how much of it is down to psychological factors until you've given your body a chance to eliminate it. If you manage to cut it out for a few weeks, but are stilll craving it, you might find EFT useful (it also might help during the initial cold turkey period). If you're not familiar with it, EFT is an energy psychology method similar to acupuncture (but no needles are involved - you just tap various points on your body with your fingers), and is great for dealing with many issues, including cravings. You can dowload a free PDF manual that shows you how to do it from http://emofree.com

And of course, you can always save the money you would have spent on chocolate to put towards your debts or buy a non-chocolate treat for yourself!
  • im up for the challenge too!

Also, i watched a interview on MTV the other day with a skinny singer (cant remember who) and she said when she craves chocolate she puts her finger in her ear and pushes on the top area of the earhole and that is supposed to subside the craving!!

How much chocolate are we talking and when are you most likely to succumb to a craving?

I am avery bad addict. I changed the big bar to minitures 3 times a day instead at set times. Now I look forward to those times everyday.

Just when I thought I'd managed to suppress the knowledge, this thread reminded me of the large bag of maltesers in the cupboard........my heart beat quickened, my mouth started watering and my thoughts became a jumble as all I could think about was that inviting bag of maltesers........

  • I used to eat a bar every day........that was 14 years ago, and I haven't had any since. I was 'lucky' in that I discovered via allergy tests that cocoa was causing my eczema. I'd been struggling with steroid creams, antibiotics etc, and once I gave up chocolate it disappeared within 3 weeks and has never come back. It was tough at first though! I've had some chocolate since, by accident - thought it was a skittle but it was a smartie - and it tasted really weird, unpleasantly rich and cloying. You do lose the taste for things when you've not had them for a while.

If you don't want to go total cold turkey, but some good quality chocolate like Green + Blacks and just have one square when you most crave it. You'll still get your choc hit, but you won't get all the rubbish that's in cheaper chocolate bars.

I can't be doing with that posh stuff - I demand some Ddmineralised whey powder and emulsifiers from my chocolate. ;)

And while cold turkey will work for some, for others telling themselves they can't have something just makes it all that more desireable...

You can always stick your chocolate in the freezer - makes it last that bit longer.

I'm a chocoholic and not afraid to admit it! :)

When I was in my teens and early 20's I could eat a full 4 bars for 99p selection in one sitting or a 150g/200g bar of chocolate in one go and still look for more. I'm a Galaxy girl but like Cadbury's as well.

I went up a dress size about 4/5 years ago and it was then I had my Chocolate "lightbulb moment" I cut down not only on the chocolate but on biscuits and crisps as well and a more varied selection of fruit and within a year I had lost all the weight I had put on and was back down a dress size.

When I started getting into my debt problems I started eating loads of chocolate, biscuits and crisps again. Not quite gone up a dress size again but have been close to it.

I have again cut down on my chocolate, biscuit and crisp intake again and eating more fruit which does surprisingly help. Had my 1st bar of chocolate tonight in over 3 weeks and it was heaven, bonus was I didn't pay for it as it was my gran's treat for me for taking her shopping. :)

  • What about getting those 10p bars of chocolate ( with a frog on the wrapper) and then putting the difference into a savings jar to pay off your debts?

Alternatively, buy one of those expensive bars of good quality chocolate, have a 1 square of chocolate. If you need more then I read somewhere that sniffing the chocolate will provide the same feel good factor as eating the chocolate.
