I've just seen a leaflet about this website and it's asking people to recommend tradesmen or services. It came in my local paper. How do we know that the recommendations aren't from cowboys recommending themselves or from their friends?

The leaflet would have just been an advert. The company would have paid to have it delivered with the paper.

The problem with any site like this is there is nothing to stop a businessman asking friends/family to sign up and recommend them.

I know that there is a site run by a few local Trading Standards (buywithconfidence), but I don't know if there is a countrywide one run by the government.
