Setting up new pc and transferring data

Hi,
I have finally got round to investing in a new pc. My "old" machine is still running w98se and the new one is xp media.
As it is due for delivery tomorrow, I wondered if there was a checklist/idiot's guide of things that I need to do in order to:
(a) set up new pc/printer etc
(b) transfer some of the programs/data - contacts, favourites, passwords etc
I have a bit of computer knowledge, but wondered if there was a correct order to do it in?
The old pc was connected to ntl broadband via USB and I am hoping to connect new one via ethernet. I will dig out all the paperwork so that connection to internet/email will not be too disruptive. Then I think it is a case of slowly working my way through...
I appreciate it is a bit vague, but thanks for the help!

File And Settings Transfer Wizard is one method you could incorporate into your change over, more info here:

You could also plug the HD from the old pc into the new pc and just copy data across on your new pc HD or backup onto DVD.
I would also backup your pc when you first get it with image software like Acronis True image it costs but its well worth it.
I also have anew pc tommorow self build and have been backing up some data to dvdr until new pc comes
