New Digital Meter Reading Confusion

Please can someone help to explain the figures on the new digital meter I've had fitted?

I have looked on the Gritish (robbing) Bass(tuards) site and their diagrams don't show my type of meter.

I've read the meter and it shows 3 figures:

t 1234.5

1 1234.5 and

2 1234.5

Does anyone know which numbers I submit?

Thanks in advance.

Which fuel? I am guessing electricity.

What you have post implies a multi-rate meter, T = Total, 1 = Rate 1 and 2 = Rate 2. Are the readings you quote the actual ones because they dont make sense. Normally 1 + 2 = T.

You only submit the values befoe the decimal point.

    Photo of meter might help.

I agree with spiro. If you have Economy 7, then you need to put in reads 1 & 2.
Your meter will usually tell you which one is 'now' so you can work out which is day and night.
Depending on the reads, the previous reads may give you an idea of which is which.

The other option is to call them with your readings. Free phone 0800 048 0202

Looks like you have an E7 meter set up as single rate. There is therefore only the one reading to give

If it was an E7 set up as single rate T = 1 and 2 would be zero.

Hiya, thanks for your replies. Yeah, silly me! Der! It is electric! And no, those numbers are not my actual readings.

I think I'm coming to the conclusion that I've been a complete dumbo and have been giving the T figure and the 1 figure as my readings in which case it would mean that I've been paying for some of my electric twice doesn't it?

I don't want to believe that because it will get my hopes up for a refund and refunds from BG are as rare as rocking horse poo!

I sent an enquiry to BG yesterday:

I have read my electric meter and am confused as to what numbers to submit. I have a new digital meter installed in January 2008 and it shows 3 numbers. The first has "t" in front of it, the second has "1" in front of it and the third has "2" in front of it. Please could you clarify which numbers to submit. The "help with meter reading" on this site doesn't show my type of meter (just the old type dials or reels of numbers). Please let me know. Thanks.

And this is the response I got from BG:

I’m sorry you had problems reading your electricity meter reading and you couldn`t get the required information on our website.

I have viewed your account and have found that you have an Economy 7 meter .i.e. a two rate meter. I see that the meter installed at your property is a two rate meter and has two registers to record your consumption however; we are billing your account on a single rate. Two-rate meters measure electricity used in the day (normal rate) and at night (low rate) in two separate sets of readings. The reading that will be displayed in the day-time is day reading and reading displayed in the night-time is the night reading.

If your meter has a button to press it will show the day or normal reading first during the daytime and the night reading first during the night time. If your meter shows the readings continually taken them once and then taken them again after a couple of hours to check which is the day reading and which is the night reading.

Once you have your readings you can provide them online or reply to this email and we’ll bill your account.

Sorry, I feel so dumb for asking, but can anyone translate that to English (plain language and laymans terms please). I'll read it a few more time to try to make sense of it but would appreciate anyone elses take on it.

    Thanks in advance.

Oh sorry, just to add, I realise now that the first number is indeed the total of the other two.

My actual readings are as follows:

    T 07139

    1 05215 and

    2 01924

Looking at previous bills, I'm almost certain I've been giving them the first two numbers! Will go and double check now.

    Thanks again.

Translation - they are billing you as one rate, should they be doing this (i.e. do you use night storage heaters, or a lot of electricity between 12am and 8am?)

To help you work out which read is which they want you to take some readings a while apart - the one that moves is now (at the moment day/normal)
could you stick new readings up so we can work it out.

I'm not in that department, but can probably kick this on a bit when I'm in if you want to pm me your details, or reply to the above email.

If they have been using T&1, then I assume all bills will need to be cancelled and redone (can't really be sure without seeing the account).

If you only have T&1 then we can work out 2 (T-1), so it can be salvaged.
How long ago was the meter fitted?

    Thanks Swanjon.

The number that shows first (at the moment) is the one with 1 in front of it i.e. the 05215 number.

I'll go do the meter again so brb.

    Thanks

ETA: Oh and I don't use night storage heaters but I am on the pc with the tv on till about 1.30am most nights and longer on Fridays and Saturdays. I work full time so don't use too much during the day but I guess I make up for it in that I have pc and tv on from about 7-7.30pm. Other appliances on during the day are fridge and freezer.

OK latest meter reading in order they show on the display:

    T 07144

    1 05218 and

    2 01925

I think I'm beginning to understand the email response now. When I first look at the meter, before pressing the blue button, it shows the number 1 figure (1 (flashing) 05218). Then when I press the blue button is shows 88888888888888 followed by date and time then the T figure, the 1 figure and finally the 2 figure.

I'll check again after midnight (or 1am not sure when economy7 starts) and see if the 2 figure is showing in the display before I hit the blue button. Then hopefully I'll know!

    Thanks again for your help.
