Getting a roofing quote - advice please

I have an original mid-1930's roof on a 3-bed semi. It needs replacement (roof, not the semi !) .

Obviously will need to get several quotes but it's all new to me.

In selecting a person / firm, is there an industry mark of quality / accreditation (as opposed to a trade association) - what is the federation of roofing contractors? or of master builders?

Could people also suggest things I need to be aware of when asking them to quote?

Thanks

all those trade bodies are a sham. they pay the dues and become a member. it means nowt.
far better to ask around locally who are the best/reliable roofers. look out for new roofs and stop, then ask the owners, who did it.
make sure any roofing company has been in business for at least 3 yrs.
a semi detached roof should cost about 6k to replace.
    Get some gorm.

Thanks for your comments Ormus, I'll do some more asking around.

Wondered whether anyone had any advice re specifics I needed to consider once someone is doing a quote?

    - I've got a nagging feeling that things like responsibility for building regs and H&S paperwork might be important?

    - Plus what sort of things are actually important to ensure the roofer covers in his quote? Materials to avoid? Insulation issues - what are the options?

    - What about warranties/ guarantees?

    - Would a roofer be competent at doing loft insulation too (as opposed to the insulation on the roof itself)?

    Thanks in advance.

Any roof tile replacement like this will require a b/regs application in respect of upgrading the insulation to current regs - if there is inferior insualtion currently there and if its cost effective to upgrade.

It's easy to see what roofers know their stuff by just asking if b/regs are required and what is required to conform. Many will incorrectly say "no", or say not to bother

Make sure that the quotes are for similar tiles and not three quotes for three different types, and if you are changing the tiles for different ones, then make sure the roof rafters are adequate for extra weight.

Specify proper plastic eaves felt support trays and roofspace ventilation, and see if the fascias and soffits need replacing too.

Scaffold should be included, as should costs for any chimenys and flashings

Can the neighbour go halves if both roofs are done - it will be cheaper

Insurance backed warranties are better than just a company guarantee
