You can also get Lifestyle bakery's brown sliced bread on prescription, which I think is really good. It's fresh and they deliver to your door after your GP has ordered it.

Hi, is that wheat AND gluten free? Quite interested in that :)
but wouldn't be able to tolerate if any gluten in it.

    Many thanks

Firstly on topic, my M and S had no gf bread left at all, so i was forced to buy a lemon drizzle cake instead....

Now Off topic. Most of the decent breads have traces of gluten in them, truly gluten free breads are terrible. I've got Juvela fresh fibre bread for lunch (its a prescription item) and that has the allowed level of gluten in it as well.

Sorry to hijack this trhead but if you want more details try here:

    http://www.coeliachelp.me.uk/codex.html

The oldest Standard dates from 1981, and it says that foods may be labelled as "gluten-free" only if the nitrogen content of the protein derived from wheat is less than 50 mg N/100 gm on dry matter, which may be equivalent to about 20-30 mg gliadin in wheat starch. The calculation is quite complicated by the fact that most of the protein in wheat starch is "starch granule protein" and not gluten.
There is a new Codex Standard in preparation, and a proposal to set the limiting level of gluten to 200-mg gluten/kg (20-mg/100 g) gluten-free food on dry matter

All the breads marked as suitable for coeliacs have to conform to the Codex Alimentarius but a good dietician will advise you that if you are very sensitive you may want to limit your intake. If you are not sensitive then it makes no difference at all.

When you get sorted with presciptions I can recommend Juvela Fresh gluten free white bread, available on prescription for Coeliacs. You have to order 8 loaves at a time but it freezes well and lasts for ages. It's a long time since I've had 'normal' bread but from what I remember it tasted like this!!:rotfl:

I second that - my husband is coeliac and the Juvela fresh bread is by far the best. Boots once gave him Glutafin by mistake and it was really disgusting.

Also good is to get the Juvela Gluten Free White Mix on prescription. It's a box with a GF flour mix and a sachet of yeast. To make it into bread, all you do is mix the mix and yeast, a pinch of salt, a bit of vegetable oil, and warm water! It mixes easily into a thick batter type of consistency, bung it in a bread tin, and prove then bake in warm then hot oven. Easy peasy and makes really good fresh bread; even I like that one!

I've also experimented with the mix to make batter for deep fat frying. I tried it on some chicken and it was yummy. Keep meaning to make make hubby proper fish and chips when I next pick up some fish. :)

I found a completely delicious recipe for GF batter, it is just Dove's farm gf flour, Xanthum gum and sparkling lemonade. I know it sounds awful but it is really light and bubbles up like real batter.

Hi - can you please give some more details on this (ie. amounts that you have used). Have struggled for ages to get a decent batter and have now given up....

It's a gluten free brown bread and the ingredients state it includes gf wheat starch. Lifestyle Healthcare Ltd are a company that was set up some years ago by a master baker who was diagnosed a Coeliac. They do lots of other absolutely delicious things too, by mail order, I can highly recommend. Website link is here: http://www.gfdiet.com/home.php
    Hope is not a strategy.

Lakeland do a really nice bread mix (you cant get it on prescription though I dont think) here:

    http://www.lakeland.co.uk/laucke-gluten-AND-dairy-free-bread-mixes/F/product/10437_10436

Really really easy to make and my son really likes this one - like most of you I think we have tried every gf product on the market. A good website though is www.dietryneedsdirect.co.uk you can search by diet (so gf, dairy free, soya free etc etc) they can be expensive but I usually try new products from there and then search for them cheaper elsewhere!

I don't ever weigh anything as I just do it by eye unfortunately. I suppose it is about a cup of flour, 2 teaspoons of Xanthum gum and i beat in lemonade until it looks like the right consistency. You need to use it within half an hour of making it to keep it the right consistency.

I coat my fish (or whatever) in Dove's farm flour and then dip it in the batter and straight into the hot fat. It's the only batter i've ever managed to use, usually it either goes solid and burns or it all falls off the fish. I saw this recipe on the TV a year or so ago, it is the gluten free equivalent to a beer batter.
