Check the T&Cs of your home and contents insurance, most only cover theft and damage not wear and tear like an extended warranty.
And it's a personal thing whether you think the extended warranty is worth it or not; it's a gamble, so way up the cost of repair/replacement vs the cost of the warranty.0 -
For a TV, it's probably worth it somewhere down the line. But in true MSE-style, I must say....shop around for the best price and most appropriate cover for you.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. I never buy extended warranties, it's cheaper to have the occaisonal thing repaired or replaced rather than spend oodles on warranties.0

And as Esqui advises it's probably available cheaper from another company; any deal through an insurer recommended by the retailer or manufacturer will probably be trying to take advantage of that fact that many customers don't shop around for the best price.0

Extended warranties are almost always a rip-off. Ask around about how much it might cost to repair a television such as yours and then decide. rememebr that your home insurance should cover you for damage to the tv and repairs may not be anything like this expensive. Also an electrical item such as a tv should last for several years. You may be able to approach the manufacturer if it breaks down within this time.0

A five year warranty on a 50" plasma @ richer sounds can cost from £49.99 so it gives you an indication off the prices charged by other. £99 per year sounds a total con.

£99 per year does seem particuarly high.
But all warranties are not created equal...the amount of research I've done comparing them for work has brought up quite some interesting points. For example:
- Some require you to pay for a repair then claim it back (like insurance)
- Some will give you back only the price you paid...or worse - only part (so you still have to pay out for a new one)
- Some give a guaranteed repair timescale (so you know how long things will take) whereas others make no mention (you could be at their mercy for weeks)
- Some make you go to the manufacturer's repair service (in which case...what extra are you paying for?)
It really is worth checking small print before you buySquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
