Exchanging faulty item without receipt

Hi Everyone,
I am hoping I might be able to garner some advice please.
My Dad bought me a Joseph Joseph chopping board for Christmas 2009. I took it out of the dishwasher a couple of weeks ago and the folding handle snapped right off. Unfortunately my Dad did not keep the receipt, so I thought I would contact the manufacturer directly.
I emailed them, but two weeks later, still had no response, so I called them today.
I explained the situation and that the board has a date stamp of 3/09 on it, proving that it is well within their 3 year warranty period.
I was basically informed that they will not handle it since they did not sell it directly to me and I would have to take it back to where I got it from - since that is who the contract is with. I explained again that I do not have the receipt (not his fault, I know), but they washed their hands of it and said it wasn't their problem.
Spoken to the retailer who said I will need POP. So, I am back at square one.
Can Joseph Joseph refuse to replace a faulty item that they manufactured when it is within the warranty period??
This is in stark contrast to Logitech, who I recently contacted regarding a faulty mouse, bought from a retailer. They tracked the serial number and found that it was outwith their warranty period, but offered me a 50% discount on a replacement from their website. Now, that is good customer service!
Any advice would be much appreciated!!!
Thanks.

The manufacturer are quite correct, you contract is with the retailer. Without proof of purchase there's nothing that can be done I'm afraid.0

POP doesnt need to be a receipt though

If your dad paid by debit/credit card then a bank statement/card statement would suffice. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Any 'warranty' with the manufacturer is in addition to your statutory rights and thus they can pretty much make up any condition they want (just as long as it's in the small print and they don't try and alter it from what they've previously stated).0
