You can claim council tax benefit. You need to talk to your mortgage provider too.

Really sorry to hear this Scotty (had cancer myself).

I think your best bet is to seek the advice of MacMillans who have an interactive system for determining benefits and also a number to call on these issues. Probably could do with some additional advice and support on what you might be facing.

Tried posting link but not allowed so google macmillans for the site.

Really hope everything turns out for the best and good luck.
Just in case you were wondering (some have)..... I'm a woman!

Support for mortgage interest (SMI) is only payable after 13 weeks of being on income based benefits. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_180321

  • Hi Scotty,

Sorry to here about the circumstances that you find yourself in, my condolence's. I have recently been in the same position as yourself. I was diagnosed with Liver Cancer 2.5 months ago, I was working then too. There are lots of benefits that you can access. I googled Cancer Charity's and came across a charity that are affiliated with Macmillan Cancer Trust, they will help you a great deal, they have benefits advisers that will guide you along that route. I was getting Working Tax Credit at the time of my diagnosis, which they have now increased, also Statutory Sick Pay, plus if your diagnosis is positive, you would be entitled to Disability Living Allowance, plus a possible Income Support top-up and also help with rent(I do not know how it works with mortgages. I actually have more income now than when I was working, so please contact Macmillan foundation. They can also help you with a one off grant for things that you need, they gave me money for a laptop, so that I didn't fell isolated. My health is now depreciating gradually and I cannot thank the help that I have recieved from these people enough. Hope that this helps, I will look on this forum again to see if I can be of any further use to you.

    All the best
