To see the major difference between 'el cheapo' TVs and the branded ones, look at the contrast ratio and brightness. Essentially, the higher the better.

Im sorry, but contrast ratios dont mean anything ~ simply as theres no standard, and ALL it means is a BS ratio between the blackest black and the whitest white

Contrast ratio by its very definition has NOTHING to do with 'overall' quality

  • After 4 years of flat-screen ownership, i can't say I have ever noticed any timing issues with sound or any solarisation.. maybe its because that article is now 5 years old that these issues are no longer 'issues'

Sound lag is definitely still an issue. Though its usually when sound is plugged through an external amplifier.

You would be well advised to take a look at the TV in store - you won't be able to judge quality properly but you will be able to check viewing angles. I bought a Hitachi cheap for the bedroom and found that I couldn't mount it where I'd planned (high on a shelf) and had to buy a wall mount instead.

I find you sometimes get badly synced sound on FreeSat. IIRC there is even a setting somewhere in the setup where it can be adjusted.

as someone who repairs tvs i would say best bet it to have a look at the TV working with a good source
internally they more or less the same in terms of build
a lot of the cheaper brand products are identical to the no name tvs

I would definately go to Richer Sounds, I got my LG 32" LCD from there and it cost £330 (I think) I did want a lesser version of the one I bought but they didnt have it in stock so the sold me the next one up for the same price (was about £30 difference in price)!! Ive learnt a lot from this site lol

If you just want a bog standard tv then look at freecycle sites where people have ones to giveaway for nothing.
