Building a Garage - costs etc.

Hi
We are currently in the process of buying a house and we are planning to build a garage but are unsure about how much this is likely to cost?
We would probably be building a decent sized garage - we are not sure exactly where it will go yet but will either be a tandem alongside the house (which may save as already have the wall of the house on one side?) or maybe a 1 1/2 width or tandem detached garage depending on where it goes and the exact measurements.
I know we will probably need to get planning permission for this and so on, but we don't really know how much to budget for the actual materials and build including foundations etc - can anyone advise?
I guess it depends what materials we used (brick matched to the house style or maybe a wood or something else) but just after a ballpark figure if anyone has experience of this. Also would we need to hire someone to design the structure and work out the structural side of it and also to build it or are there aspects that we could do ourselves?
Thanks:)
