Use the local buses - these are geared up for moving people+luggage.

€5 each one way or €9 return.
If necessary, get a taxi from Mestre railway station where the bus drops you off to the hotel.0 -
We used the bus from Treviso to Venice but it stops at Mestre. The buses are timed with the Ryanair flights. I think you can get the tickets from a machine in the luggage collection area but, as there was a long queue for the machine, we picked up our tickets at a manned desk in the arrivals hall. The bus is then just outside the doors.0

http://www.actv.it/en has all the info you will need to plan your routes. Some of the waterbuses run very very late if not all night from memory
Someone else above has posted the bus timetable I believe0 -
Certain lines run all night, you will need to check, they do not make all stops though, so check that too or you could find yourself stranded!0

For cheap eats, I found Brek - near the train station - very reasonable. It's a cafeteria, with a choice of mains, salads, desserts - I got a great seafood risotto, a salad and a quarter litre of wine for about 10.50 euro. The coffee was good value here, 2 euro against 3.20 near the Rialto - and 15 upwards for a cappucino in St Mark's square!
I found it was great just to wander around, calling into the occasional old church for yet more Old Masters...
The most useful tips I had were to bring or buy a good map, and to bring a torch - the little alleyways are sometimes not lit at night!0
