need to end Talk Talk contract early

Wondering if anyone can help?

I am currently supporting a woman who has been removed from her home for her own safety by the police.
Talk Talk provide phone,broadband etc at the property she has had to leave.

She needs to cancell this to prevent ex partner running up huge debts etc as it is in her name. He remains living in the property.

We have contacted Talk Talk today and been advised that she needs to pay to cancell the contract (even if we have crime ref's and its through no fault of her own). Surely this can't be right??


They have agreed to put a 'temp bar' on the phone to prevent him from using it.

Talk Talk renewed the contract themselves in March 2010 and it apparently ends in Sept 2011.

Is there anyway to cancell without her paying?

Yes it's right. Talk talk are a private company and rely on contract law. Even death makes no difference (they can claim on the estate). The answer is to ask if they will suspend the service until the service can be reprovided, but they are under no obligation to do so. As she is still responsible for the line, she should arrange fo service to be blocked immediately (although she still may be required to pay despite the service being withdrawn).

Thats exactly what I have done. They have agreed on a complete bar of it and suspended for 3 months
