master socket

is it possible to get the bt master socket moved? i could do this very easily myself but assume only bt can do it. the place i would like it would be a very easy job for bt because its a lot closer to the pole and under ground connections than where it is now, only 3 feet from the outside wall. any thoughts?

Of course it's possible but, as you say, only BT can do that. I have no idea how much they'd charge but £50 upwards is likely.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I think that you have answered your own question in your second sentence! Just be aware that if you have any problems you will have to pay for them to sort it out.

  • In case anybody is thinking of moving/changing it themselves. The only people on the planet who are officially allowed to change your BT Master box are BT engineers. It's ILLEGAL to change it yourself. You face suspension/termination of BT service and/or a stiff fine if you do so. The Master line box is the "demarkation" point between Your Equipment and BT's Exchange Line, so everything on your side is your problem, everything on BT's side, including the Master box itself, is BT's problem.

illegal as criminal ,is that what you are talking about,or just against BT policy, has any-one been proscuted,BT are not the government,it would not be dangerous like gas. They might take a civil action ,but the police would not be interested.

No i obviously dont mean illegal in a criminal sense.perhaps forbidden would have been a better choice of word.

Depending on where you want the socket moving to, it may well be easier to leave it where it is and install and extension socket. You don't have to have anything plugged into the master socket (apart from connecting your extension, that is).

i have 3 extension from the master socket at the moment but when i finally got broadband late last year these extensions slowed the connection down because the builders used alarm wire!! these are wired behind the plaster so cannot be changed. i hate running wires along floors etc. also its a long thin house and the master is at one end. going wireless with the broadband and phones, having the master in the middle of the house would be ideal.
