Breaks in the middle of tutorials

In a two hour tutorial how well do you think asking for a 5 or 10 minute break in the middle is going to go down? (break needed for medical reason I must point out)

  • we are allowed breaks in our tutorials. just turn up a little early and ask the tutor, it should be fine.

Should not be a problem for a medical issue...

Also, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that the average human brain starts to get bored after 20 minutes... in a two hour tute you really should have a break scheduled at somepoint...

  • Yes - most definately - all students should be entitled to a break.

Woody Allen: "If only God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name at a Swiss bank".
  • do you have the dsa? its not just for stuff and money, its also to help you with practicalities, all of your tutors (with your permission) get told about your particular problems so you arent asked to do anything you cant do, you arent forced to mention anything embarrasing in front of anyone and you get breaks etc. when you need them. its worth applying for.

  • Definitely ask for one, whether for a medical reason or not.

When I was a UG (many years ago), we used to have a 5 min break in middle of 50 min lecture. Lecturer used to read a bit of the Magic Roundabout or Paddington Bear. She said that the brain needed a break as concentration lasts about 20-25 mins.
She used to add a question or two in the termly assessments we had too!
Used to be the highlight on a Friday morning!

  • If you need breaks for a medical reason then it could be well worth your while checking in with your university's Disability Office, they may be able to help you in other ways as well.

Hi Phil, I take it this is not your first year as a student? How were the lecturers previously? When I was at uni, we always got breaks during our seminars, for the smokers and caffeine addicts lol.
    Hope it goes well.

  • definitely take a break, ask nicely and it should be fine, but get one. You should not feel compelled to mention a medical issue.
  • Definitely. We always have a 5 - 10 minute break in the middle of 2 hour sessions. The lecturer and all the other students will be grateful that someone has bothered to ask! :D
