Problem with family doing work for you

What would you do?

Bought a new house off a small local builder back in March. Wife's brother works for the builder. Brother agreed to do some work for us rather than getting the builder to do it (cheaper). I was reluctant, but brother in law said he would commit to doing it and wife was happy to chase if necessary.

Jobs include fitted wardrobes, gate to one side fence off other side and erect tv wall bracket in bedroom.

Wardrobes were done before we moved in, however, he didn't fit cupboard latches, the handles are v loose and one door no longer closes.

TV bracket not done.

Gate completed (after 3 months of constant pushing) but side panel not done.

My missus was prepared to chase him at first and now she gets really angry if I ask what the hec is going on.

We have said to brother in law that we'll ask the builder to finish off the jobs, but he said that would embarrass him. However, still no sign of work being done.

I've no idea how to take this forward. If wardrobes were done by builder then we could have them back to fix the door that won't close. As things are we're stuck with it.

How do we approach this and get it sorted out. Families eh?! I'd quite happily go next door to our builder and get them to do it asap, but that would put a lot of pressure on the missus and her relationship with her brother.

    Move? ;-P

Seriously I dont know, its different for each family relationship. Maybe try and have a chat about it with him and ask if he has the time to do it by xx date and if he doesnt just get someone else to do it (but not the builder he works for). Its a cost but saves face for the bro in law and hopefully will not put strain on the family relationship

Thanks for this. It's a good idea perhaps getting someone else to do it. The builders office is right next door to us so brother in law is next to our house 5 days a week in the morning and in the evening. I really don't know why he cannot do these jobs. Perhaps the missus needs to be a bit firmer with him. I don't know, but thanks for the idea.
