Tavira, Portugal - a couple of questions

Hi,

Potentially looking at going towards the end of August for 11 nights, and wondered if anyone could answer a couple of questions.

We stayed in Lagos a couple of years ago which we loved and hence why looking at going back to Portugal. How does Tavira compare? is it as nice? we loved the beaches and old town in Lagos!! along with the awesome restaurants!!

Also is there much to see that side of the Algarve? we went to all the other towns and "the end of the world" cliffs which were good, but i cant see anything major that side! Also a lot of the property seems to be in cabanas d Tavira but am i right in thinking we want to be in Tavira itself?

Any advice/tips would be much appreciate it... trying to resist the temptation just to go back to Lagos as we like seeing different things!

Thanks

It is lovely along that end. We stayed in Montegordo, which has an amazing beach. It is a nice sized town and you can take a walk along to the Spanish border and cross into Spain if you wish. Tavira is small with not a lot going on.

Tavira itself isn't a tourist resort, it's just a little town with, as said above, not alot going on. There's really not much benefit in being there for holidaymakers

Cabanas is a 10 min drive outside Tavira, and TBH it not that great. My ex inlaws used to run a bar there and still live there. It's a very small, not particularly picturesque, resort with just 2 large hotels, and some smaller accomodation. Most of the bars, restaurants and shops are along the main 'beach front'.

But, and here's a big drawback, you cannot get to the beach easily. There's a tidal river that runs between the promenade and the beach, you can wade across at low tide, but have to get a boat across when the tide is high.

It's OK if you plan to be out alot, it's about a 45 minute drive to Spain, there are some lovely villages up in the hills, etc., but if you're not hiring a car it's a bit dull.

Hmmm... i had always read good reviews about Tavira so suprised about your comments. my laws went the year we went to Lagos and said it was lovely especially on the evening sitting out in the square with live music.

Travelling to the beach doesnt bother me and as we would hire a car exploring is fine..... isnt making me sure of going there for 11 nights... might have to be Lagos again!

    thanks guys

  • Hi,

Both Tavira and Cabanas are amazing!!!!

    Check out wwwcabanasuncovered.com

Stay in Cabanas and either get the bus or train to Tavira or travel further afield to the Spanish border and cross over to Spain on the ferry. The train is the cheaper option, and they are very clean and punctual!
