MASSIVE EDF PRICE HIKES (from August 2010)

Thanks Mr K. Nice to get someone's nod on this. FYI, I've now moved over to Online Tariff V6, which currently is even cheaper than V5 (at least in my area). Of course, I can't now cancel in the next 12 months without incurring a fee (£25 per fuel - £50 in total) and there's nothing stopping EDF cranking the prices up to within 2% of the standard tariff before the winter anyway. However, if they do, then I'll see this as another cynical ploy to tie me in for 12 months before putting up their prices. I fully expect EDF to crank up the V6 tariff once everyone has received the letter and jumped ship. Of course, V6 ends at the end of June 2011 anyway, so I'll have to face all this again in 12 months time. But at least I'll be prepared to receive one of their misleading letter. I feel sorry for all the pensioners that are deliberately targeted by these shinanigans.

I got the letter today, just checked and Eon are only £24 more expensive over the year, but there is £55 cashback and no penalty so i think that looks the better option for me0

"EXTRACT FROM TARIFF RULES FOR EDF ENERGY’S ONLINE TARIFF"
6. You agree to remain on the EDF Energy Online Tariff Version 5 for each account
until the Online Tariff Version 5 comes to an end, which, unless we write to you
to advise of any extension, shall be 31 July 2010 (the ‘End Date’).
7. Once the Online Tariff Version 5 ends (“End Date”), each participating
Customer hereby agrees for each of their energy accounts under the
Online Tariff Version 5 to be automatically transferred onto EDF Energy’s
standard tariff product at such time, or such alternative product that
EDF Energy considers to be an appropriate product for the Customer’s
metering arrangements. EDF Energy will write to the Customer within 65
working days of the End Date (the “Notice”) to confirm this agreed transfer has
taken place. If the Customer subsequently changes their mind and wishes to
be supplied on an alternative EDF Energy product after the End Date they may
contact EDF Energy on 0800 096 9000‡at any time within 14 days of the
Notice to request their energy accounts are transferred onto an alternative
EDF Energy product and in these circumstances EDF Energy will update the
Customers account with their chosen product with effect from the End Date.
This document is not jumping out from the EDF website at the moment, so let it be a reminder to save the appropriate pdf terms and rate card for any tarrif you sign up to.
Have you got the v6 items?0 -
Sorry, but you are throwing your dummy out after having received a VERY generous deal from EDF. It was widely reported when the tariff was launched that it was uncharacteristically generous to users with low consumptions - much cheaper than Ebico, even. You knew it was due to end in July this year. They HAVE NOT withdrawn the bargain early and bumped it up to 2% less than the standard (or whatever the guarantee was). Instead they have maintained the brilliant rate right up to the end of the assured period (despite other tariffs being increased earlier in the year.)
I appreciate the frustration - I am in the same boat as a very low user - massive increase in rate 1 and a miniscule 6% pro rata discount rather than a flat £25 quarterly discount (which equates to a 30% discount for me) - but I guarantee you are not going to find a better deal from any other supplier.
Yes, the letter is a bit irritating - but you knew it was coming.
Just wondering when you state that it was 'widely reported that this tariff was uncharacteristically generous to users with low consumptions' where was this reported? I don't remember seeing anything? Do you work for EDF?!
I don't understand why utility companies have so many different tariffs, its really confusing unless you have an age to sit and read through all the small print. I remember when I signed up to V5, I asked for advice on here and several of us e-mailed EDF to ask if there was a penalty for leaving, everybody seemed to get different answers. I got a different answer for the same questions over the phone and via e-mail, its no wonder people get confused, the staff at EDF seem to have no clue either!!

...I don't understand why utility companies have so many different tariffs, its really confusing ...
Try googling "confusion marketing""Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Must say I agree with the OP on the phrasing of the letter - those who do not keep tabs on the tariffs available from the various companies will not appreciate that the letter 'disguises' a massive price hike. Plain speaking it ain't!
It would come as no surprise to us cynical 'anoraks'. I had been on BG's fixed price tariif for the past 4+ years which sadly finished on 30 April. I got a letter telling me I would be transferred to their fixed to 2012 tariff - possibly the highest priced tariff available!! - if I did nothing. The letter was couched in terms that implied it was a great deal.(no mention of their Websaver which was reasonably competitive) I wonder how many have just moved to that 2012 tariff because they didn't realise just how expensive it is? When they do realise they will then discover there is a penalty for leaving.0 -
I'm on this tariff and haven't had the privelege of this letter yet. Hopefully most people will see through it. No-one on here will fall for it that's for sure. We will just vote with our feet as we usually do. I have found EDF ok to be honest but this letter is laughable. If and when i do get it i will phone them up and translate it back to them0

This is odd, if you do a comparison based on being on the EDF V5 tariff the comparison site says this..
"Customers on EdF's Online S@ver v5 tariff will receive a minimum 2% discount on their Standard tariff prices until 31st March 2011. There is a £50 cancellation fee for this tariff if customers switch away before the end date."
Hmmm, maybe it depends on when you signed up to it as to when the end date is, did this tariff disappear for a while then get re-launched?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Remember, folks,
'EDF Online Dual Fuel V5',
'EDF Online Dual Fuel Version 5' and
'EDF Online S@ver 5 Dual Fuel'
are three completely different tariffs with varying finishing dates and penalties. Do keep up.What's so confusing about that?
(At least with nPower SOLs 1 to 19 you can easily keep track of what tariff you are on.)
