Car insurance query - unsettled claim

Hello everyone,

I started a thread here a while ago on the car accident.

https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2460967=

Now my car insurance is due for renewal and I usually apply through price comparison websites. But this year I am confused as to how I should describe my situation.

1. "Number of claims" - My insurer explained that the above accident will remain in my history as an unsettled claim for up to three years. I didn't claim anything but was told that the other party can do, and has three years for doing that. OK, but what can I put in the "claim amount" box when I renew my insurance - I don't know how much they would claim. What should I do?

2. "What is the nature of the claim" - is it "no persons injured" or "persons injured" in my case? The boy got a few cuts and bruises as he put it - does it mean that he was injured?

3. "Convictions (including pending)". I have pleaded not guilty and my trial will not take place until autumn. Does it mean that I have a pending conviction or should I just tick "no convictions" and let my new insurer know if and when I am convicted after the trial? The problem is when I try to register this matter as pending I am required to put in the number of penalty points I received and the fine I paid - and I don't know yet if I will get any and if I will then how many/how much.

I would be very grateful for anyone's advice. Many thanks in advance!

BT

    1) Although there has been no "claim", this is an incident that needs to be declared.

    2) It looks like if there is a claim it could be personal injury.

    3) Usually they want to know about prosecutions pending as well as convictions.

After you have decided on an insurer you may be best to discuss this with them so there is no question of them being able to say you left anything undeclared. In any case check any paperwork which they send you which lists your history/pending court case etc. and make sure it's accurate.

It can be difficult to switch insurers while your claim is still unsettled... sadly, I wouldn't think you can rely on Price Comparison sites since half the insurers there might not be happy to cover you when they find out the full details. You might be in for a phone-a-thon!

I would state the unsettled claim and if they don't have an unsettled catagory put in 0 as the claim amount for now. Since its not settled thats not lying.

I would also state the pending conviction as the date of the accident and put in 0 points and 0 ban and 0 fine for now. Again not lying.

I would follow through with a phone call to the company that offers you the lowest quote and explain the situation to them and get them to check they consider your answers correct.

Good luck for the trial, I hope it goes your way.

As previously posted, when they ask about claims, you need to check and see if that is defined (as it usually is) to mean something like "claims or losses or incidents that could have lead to a claim/loss"

I did online quotes listing this accident as an unsettled claim with persons injured and got plenty of offers.

I only wasn't sure what to put in the claim amount (how can I know that if it hasn't been settled) and I couldn't put in '0' - so I put £1000. Is that the way of doing it?

Why would insurers mind if my claim is unsettled - they won't be the ones dealing with matter, will they?

    Thanks!

Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to do using one popular price comparison site. But it wouldn't let me put in zeros. Hence my earlier query...
