Buying House Please Help

I hope someone can help I bought a council property through the right to buy scheme last january and now really need to move due to health reasons we have seen a property which is ideal for us but but they have an exchange date on their property of November if we sell before january we will have to repay over £12000 if we wait until after this it will only be £6000.
We did consider bridging but seems like a very expensive way to go would the Northern rock allow us to have 2 mortgages running at the same time for the 2 months? (which we could probably afford) or does anyone have any ideas.
Any help is much appreciated.
