Confused about sickness benefit

Hi all,

I've been signed off work waiting on knee surgery since January (my job involves going up scaffolds and on building sites a lot of the time), which I had at the end of June. I'm now in the recovery phase. I thought I'd be back by the end of July but my doctor has told me it's probably going to be end of August. My full pay from work ran out at the start of June and I went onto half pay, and they sent me a form to call up and then send off with the benefits people, which I did. The lad on the phone said I would be entitled to something as I'd paid tax for the last 6 years, never claimed etc. But I haven't heard anything from them yet and don't even know their phone number, how long does this process take?

Also my old sicknote expired and I got a new 4 week one last week, should I be sending this to someone other than my employer? I live in Stockton authority if that makes any difference.

Thanks for reading

What was the form called? If it was an SSP1 form telling you when SSP will end this can be issued up to five weeks before SSP actually ends.

Yes it was SSP1. My SSP ended on 12th June so long gone! I put the form in in mid June, as I only received the form 4 days before SSP was due to end.

Thanks for the replies so far, but can anyone tell me if I should have sent the sicknote to anyone other than my employer?

You did the right thing. Your employer should return the sick note to you so it can then be sent to the DWP. You may need to contact your employer about this as the DWP need a med cert to pay ESA.

If you need to contact the ESA section you can get the telephone number from here
