Wireless broadband - Can anyone help

I just bought a wireless adsl router for a friend
Its a AWR-2440 125M Wireless Firewall ADSL2+ 4port router to be precise. It comes with a USB wireless dongle
I bought it from Aria and the make is a HiPoint eu
Theres no indication of a support website anywhere on the manual or on the packaging and I resent having to pay premium rate to contact aria especially since they have ignored every email I have ever sent them

The packaging states that it works with Win 98Se/2000/nt/Me/XP yet both the paper and CD rom manuals only explain how to install using XP

I must install it to a P3 700 computer with Win98se which does not have ethernet socket but does have USB conectivity

Can anyone please help guide me through this?

I already feel like I made a mistake buying this cheapo item from aria but now I feel I have to manage with it since Aria's returns policy leaves a lot to be desired and weighs heavily against any benefits to the consumer

How much did you buy it for?

I assume you plug in the USB - does hardware installation wizard come up? The drivers should be on the cd.

Turn on the router and it should broadcast the SSID and hopefully connect to the network with the computer and go to the router ip (prob 192.168.1.1) and to the setup that way.

Sorry its a bit generic, but difficult to say what to do without more info.

I wonder if u could download the manuals for some other routers (netgear, belkin, linksys) and they should have how to install in win 98. compare with how to install in xp for those routers, and the differences are going to be about right for your installation as well.
  • I have no experience of that model,, but you are probably going to have to plug it into an ethernet card somewhere to configure it, then go to 192.168.1.1 (I think?) in IE to configure WEP encryption, then install your usb wireless dongle on the 98 PC, tell it the ssid and wep key, and connect.

Alternatively send it back to the shop and ask them to swap it for a Netgear/Linksys/Belkin because you have been unable to get it to work on 98..

There are some generic wireless instructions here:

    Thanks for the advice
Like I said, Aria are not an easy company to deal with
Thy charge fees for testing items before accepting them back and even then if theyre not 100% satisfied that its resaleable (in their eyes) then they wont refund all of it. Fair enough in a way but it all becomes a lengthy drawn out process.

I have learrnt the hard way
Aria is a great company for price and fast delivery but never buy anything from them unless your 100% sure that you know its what you want because if you want an easy returns process or have other issues you can forgeddaboutit

Also their customer service is really bad
over half hour waits most of the time end even then you may get disconnected before you can speak to them.
Typically their sales line always answere quickly but they refuse to deal with anything other than sales
