help! loud noise from my boiler

hi

i am thinking about getting a new bathroom fitted and am not sure if my boiler needs replacing or if something in it needs replacing??!

It makes a really loud noise when i use the hot water which is kind of whiney?? and high pitched- its pretty constant when the hot water is on for any length of time.

i have a gravity fed system which i reckon is at least 10 years old. ive read other posts about boiler noise but they seem to be about combi boilers or the problem doesnt sound the same. ive only lived in this house for 2 months now so havent really experienced the heating on all the time so im hoping that doesnt make the same noise as it would be deafening all the time!

any advice appreciated as i really dont know much about boilers!!

Thanks

  • Ive just had mine replaced. It cost almost 3000 pounds. Tomorrrow the man doing the electrics for it will be finishing off the job. Its a real pain when your boiler plays up. I just got the one quote and got the job done. I just couldnt be asked to compare prices. My old boiler was only five years ago, but I had lots of trouble with it. So the only solution was too dump it. I put the old one on Freecycle and someone says they want it!!.
  • Hi

Is the noise from the boiler or the pipes - is it when the boiler is running (ie heating the the water in the tank) or when you run the bath?

Try runing the heating and see if the noisde is still occouring (best to try it now anyway whist it is not needed rather than wait until you really need it and then you can get it sorted properly in no rush (3 quotes etc) if it aint working!))

If you get a metal rod (about 5mm dia) you could put it against the pipework and listen carefully to the other end (use a felt pad on the end (laminate floor protection pads would do) or fold your earlobe over the ear canal DO NOT INSERT ROD INTO YOUR EAR!!) you may be able to trace the noise to it's loudest point in the system.

    Cheers

sounds like it may be the pump. You may be able to get a grant towards the cost of a more energy efficient boiler.
    have a look here http://www.saveenergy.co.uk/myhome/gid/

the government are keen to cut down on carbon emissions and having a more energy efficient boiler will help. you could also try and contact your local council or current energy supplier if you are a home owner.
