Help some idiot has smashed my number plate

It's a pain getting replacement plates now as you need to provide your log book to confirm ownership & there are fewer places authorised to make them. Halfords & any main dealer can do them - no idea of cost though. I recently had a rear plate made in the local (Leicester) market for £10 - I wanted my name under the reg as it's a private plate & the stallholder said that as it was technically illegal to display anything other than the maker's details he didn't need the log book! Ain't UK law wierd!0

Hi Cazzie!
You will need:
1. your V5 registration document (log book)
2. Proof of address
3. and something that proves that you are the person you claim to be. (Passport, Works ID, - anything with your photo and name)
Thats the cr*p out of the way.
Now, the cheapest way is to contact your local motor factor. Basic number plates should cost you around £8 - £10 per plate, anything less and you have a good deal.
Hope this helps

Sorry to over rule people, but you don't need it all. Ok, legally you do but in practice you don't.
Have a look on eBay, cheapest place by miles for plates! Check feedback, and have a look at lots of auctions for the cheapest price. No hassle with V5 etc at the shop, and much cheaper!0 -

I do not see how this is a pain. Think about it would you rather this happened or rather that anyone could just go an get a copy of you number plate and stick it on there car. And come on how much hassle is picking up a piece of paper before going to get you new plate0 -

This is just another spurious so-called "security" mechanism which has no effect whatsoever on the bad guys (who will buy a set of plates on eBay, or at a market stall, or wherever), but places an additional and unnecessary burden on the legitimate motorist.

Go to local paint/panel suppliers. Most will do plates for £6-7 and just put a "not for road use" sticker on, which you then peel off.Happy chappy0
