Bank account for returning UK resident

I have lived in portugal from 2002-2010. Im originally from UK though. Before I went I did have an account with Abbey but I dont know any details from it and as far as I know there was no money in it so I would assume its closed or something by now.
Im looking to open an account now Im back and am wondering who would be best to get a full account from. Im looking for a proper debit card (visa) not an electron or solo. And maybe a small overdraft.
Im basically looking to establish some sort of credit history for myself so that I can look at getting a mortage in a few years time.
Ive been back since February and am on electoral roll.

You may have to settle for a basic account while you build up your credit score. An overdraft facility seems unlikely, for the time being.

Thanks for ur reply. Im told I can get an account with Yorkshire Bank that will come with a visa debit card. The only problem I have is that I do a bit of work 3 nights a week for which I am paid cash and I would like to pay that into the bank but the nearest Yorkshire Bank to me is over 10miles away so its not very practical.
Im hearing that Lloyds TSB can be generous with their offerings from time to time so I think I may give them a try.0
