big gas bill!!

  • The amount of people that have had huge summer gas bills is getting scary - its fingerless glvoes and wooly hat time during winter (when sat in the house).

    I have stopped taking a bath (even though I love these dearly) and shower now. Shower is electric too s its not as bad.

    well the latest!

    Had bill through today with up to date meter reading.
    bill = £312.24!!
    meter serial numbers do correspond as I checked that straight away although I thought there could be some sort of error as gas bill is addressed to be in the basement flat my flat actually being the second floor flat. Looking over correspondance from BG some letters are addressed to second floor flat some to basement. After speaking to them they cant understand the address problem but assure me the meter number on the bill corresponds to my bill. All that they have suggested is a 7 day meter reading test. Taking a reading every day to see if there is something wrong with the meter!

    So £312 for the last 3 months in my 1 bed flat. no heating on. Long haul crew away at least 3 days a week. Surely its not right?

    any thoughts?

    many thanks paul

    Unless I have missed it, you still haven't said if your previous bills were estimated - the bills from earlier this year or even last year.

    The commonest cause of a very high bill - like your £312 - is that your previous bill(s) was based on an underestimated meter reading and most of that £312 is to clear a debit balance.

    Taking one bill in isolation is meaningless unless it is based on actual meter readings at start and end of billing period.
