Heating water - issues with timer/immersion

Hi

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I hope it is.

We are privately renting a property which is oil heating/hot water and electric.

We moved in over the winter and used the oil for heating and hot water and kept everything on a timer.

When a relative moved in (a month after us) he noticed that his shower did not have hot water in the mornings. I rung the estate agents and all they could say was that the shower had been a problem for years.

I have since discovered that if I have the immersion heater on this will heat the water for the shower. Obviously this is costing a fortune because it does not have a timer and sometimes I forget to switch it off all day. The timer for heating and hot water was switched off months ago when I realised - I thought it was better to save on oil if my elec bills are going to be high!!

The house is about 15 years old and was built with 1 bathroom with shower over the bath. Sometime over the last 10 years a shower has been added to a bedroom and it now has an ensuite (toilet plus sink). I am guessing it has been connected incorrectly hence why we get no hot water if we try to heat by oil only.

Obviously it would cost a lot to be rectified which I am sure the landlord would not do but is there anything I can do about the immersion like a timer.

I appreciate the best thing to do would be to more organised with switching it off in the mornings and on again in the evenings. As it is I have to leave it on all night to ensure hot water in the morning when if I had a timer I could put it on for a few hours in the early hours of the morning which would be sufficient.

Thanks for any help you can give.

you can buy 3kw timer/programmers for about 45 quid.

maybe better to fit an electric shower?

You can use something like this if you don't need preset times but don't want to leave it on all day.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
