Microsoft Access help please

Hi all

I am trying to sort an issue with MA. The problem is, when I try to sort the "referral number" field in ascending order, the numbers do not appear in order. E.g. the order will appear as:

1036
1037
1038
1039
104
1040
1041

This makes it a pain to have to scroll through to allocate a new referral number! Can anyone help to solve my problem please?

I hope I looked in the right place. When I clicked on design, the Referral field is set as text. Should it be number?

I changed the field to numbers and it's all in order now!
