Days out in London

Good Morning,

I was hoping someone could help me pull together a nice (cheap) day out in London.

Even though I live in London, I do enjoy doing the touristy stuff and for the past 3 years on or around my birthday ( in 2 weeks) rather than going on the p***, a friend and I have had "days out" last year we went to London Zoo by barge, then a picnic in Regents Park with bottle of cheap champers, the year before the Natural History Museum, followed by the V&A and then a picnic in Regents Park with bottle of cheap champers, and the year before that we did a open air bus tour and ended up in... yep you've guessed a picnic in Regents Park with bottle of cheap champers.

This year we are both totally skint, so free stuff would be good, although we do have some spends, we have agreed no more than £50 each for the day and that is to include food and drinkies entrance fees etc.

So any recommendations, hints for BOGOFs etc. I should be able to do this myself but I think I am a bit confuddled as there is so much choice!

Thanks
YDSM

PS: It doesn't have to end up in Regents Park with a picnic!!!
I wish I would take my own advice!

  • How about Greenwich?

You could pick up a river taxi from Embankment or Westminster and go to Greeniwch Pier.

The Maritime Museuma and Queens House are free, I think the Royal Observatory is as well.

You could finish off in Greenwich park with cheap champers - just for a change! :D
  • London Eye and the South Bank?

Show tickets (maybe a matinee if you do it on a Saturday with the picnic before or after) - either through www.daysoutguide.co.uk or trying the TKTS booth on Leicester Square (more details here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-tickets#theatre) Or look on lastminute.com for dinner and show deals.

If you're not bothered about the picnic thing and like Mexican food then I would go to Wahaca in Covent Garden for a cheap and nice lunch, but that is because I absolutely love it there so may be a bit biased!

  • I had kinda thought of Greenwich as Jools Holland is there that weekend, but the tickets were a bit £££ plus I love him she hates him lol.

But its a good idea, I love travelling by the river and can hop on fairly close to where I live. Also haven't been to the market for years so good for a mooch around - I will defo be suggesting it.

    Thanks :-)

Still open to other ideas though - keep'em coming!

    Hi youdontseeme

If you are travelling into London by train I recommend that you go to the 2 for 1 London days out website to get some good deals.

For around £8 each you can buy a red rover style ticket with City Cruises which leave from Westminster Pier stopping off at Waterloo, Tower Bridge then Greenwich, this gives unlimited travel with them for the day.

The 2 for 1 is also available for the "Big Wheel" at Waterloo, at Tower Bridge, The Tower of London will cost about £8 each and the Tower Bridge tour is even less.
Whilst at Tower Bridge have a short walk along the river into St Katherines dock where you can have a quick drink at The Dickins Inn, if the weather is good you could almost imagine your in Cannes, a real haven.

As your picnic and bottle of champers will no doubt feature I also agree that Greenwich Park would be an excellent choice.

Hope you have a great day.
    cheers
