what's best chicken wings or thighs?

Options
I am thinking about doing a southern/cajun bake thingy and wondered what people find better - wings or thighs? I know thighs are okay for stuffing but I was thinking of making up some cajun type sauce and oven baking? I always tend to avoid chicken wings when I go out as they are sooo fiddly but saw Nigel Slater messing about with them the other day and it got me thinking...
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

  • Not a great fan of chicken wings. I just think by the time you've got rid of the pointy bit of skin and bone at the end and the stringy stuff in the only bit of meat on there then there's not enough left to feed a fly :D

    However..........

Nigel Slater's stuff is usually top class. What did he do?

  • oh he slow roasted them i think and then took off all the meat for a club sandwich. to be quite honest i was trying to do three things at once so didn't see how he cooked them. ........

I'd go for the thighs...there's usually more meat on them and they dont' cost much more than the wings. I like wings as a finger food, but too fiddly if they're in a dish with a sauce, if that makes sense.

  • I'm a thigh girl too ;) I think they have lots more flavour and more meat than any other chicken portions (just my opinion!).

Definitely! Butchers often sell them cheap (cheaper than supermarkets), because they find it quite difficult to sell the non-breast meat.
  • thighs every time, my kids wont eat any other part we fight over them, why cant they invent a chicken with 6 thighs for us~!!>>????

There is very little meat on a wing, so thighs are much better

I prefer chicken wings, much more tender than thighs, especially suitable for oven bake imo.

I would say thighs as you get more meat on them. And they're more versitile.

But wings are great for BBQing up or spicing

  • I can't be doing with wings. I use thighs - prefer them, but somehow got in a rut of buying just frozen breasts - don't know why - when in fact the thighs are more succulent. I think though they can be very fiddly if you are doing stirfry or similar.
