Printer/Ink problem... advice please

I have an Epson DX8400 printer/scanner.
The black ink doesnt seem to be getting through fully, I have performed nozzle check, head cleaning etc and only a very small amount of black will print on the test sheet. If I want to print a document in black, nothing prints at all. The colours are fine.
Any advice?

I had lots of printing problems with Epson. If not used for a couple of weeks, the cartridges would dry up, and it would take repeated head cleanings, before it would work, and then not very well. I also had loads of other problems, with their buggy software, jamming paper tray, etc. It eventually packed up after just a few years.
I've now happily got a HP all-in-one, which has been trouble-free. So next time you have to buy new cartridges, might be worth thinking about getting a different printer for the price of two cartridges.
