Why do I need insurance to purchase tax?
My insurance is up for renewal the middle of this month my tax is up at the end of this month. I've decided to sell it before the insurance expires.
To make it more attractive to buyers I wanted to get 6 months tax. But on visiting the DVLA website it says the car must be insured on the date the tax starts. Since my own insurance will have expired there as yet will be no insurance in place for that date.
I don't get why it needs to be insured before purchasing the tax especially in my circumstance. I could easily get around it by purchasing day insurance covering just the date the tax starts from.

If you're taxing a vehicle, the assumption is you wish to use it on the public roads, hence the requirment that it be insured."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

As per this post.
Why don't you advertise the car stating that you will pay the first 6 months road tax for the new owner instead?0 -
I thought you could renew your road tax online from the 5th of the month it is due to expire ie you could have taxed it on 5th July even though it is not due to expire until 31st July - not totally sure but I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable will be along soon.:j:T Total Prize Value 2012 - £1835 :T:j

You can renew your tax now from the 5th of the month prior.
But you still need valid insurance (and MOT if applicable) to get it. (ie You must have valid cerificates for the date the tax commences, not the date you attempt to buy it)0 -
Ah hadn't thought about needing the insurance needing to be valid on expiry/renewal date - having a totally blonde moment LOL - thanks Quentin:j:T Total Prize Value 2012 - £1835 :T:j

because that would require the buyer to have an insurance certificate on day of purchase
most folks getting a private sale would buy and call up the insurar to change vehicles(or set up a policy) so wouldnt have the certificate
the op should have bought the tax last month and cashed in the outstanding month/took the hit0 -

That's what I'll have to do but I think being able to advertise "6 months tax included" helps it sell better than saying there is no tax but I'll reduce the price by £95.0 -
Yes - I think you're right but in the circumstances perhaps not a lot of choice. That's what I'll have to do but I think being able to advertise "6 months tax included" helps it sell better than saying there is no tax but I'll reduce the price by £95.
Just a thought, if the road tax can't be included perhaps a marketing tool may be 'A £100 of petrol included'. It may get your ad noticed.0 -
TO get road tax you need insurance, and V5, and MOT certificate and they dont take credit cards as payment.
Its a pain in the bum sometimes but I think they do keep a lot of sheds off the road by doing it so dont mind the extra effort.0 -

because if you could buy tax without isurance half the country and his uncle would be at it - its just another way of ensuring things are done correctly, obviously it doesnt always work, and insurances could be cancelled day after tax is bought etc, but it probabably deters a good few0
