If you want to reset to factory settings so it runs as sweet as a nut press F11 + Crtl on bootup.

Found the password in the end, Followed by it not really helping - did a fresh install and put the proprietary drivers back on. Good job I had my laptop and flash drives with me. One of the several drivers it did not have was the network adaptor* so the windows box could not connect to the net

Got rid of MacAfee for Panda Cloud AV. a bit simpler to use and lighter on resources.

*My mate also tried to get me to install his router software to fix this (it wouldn't have) despite the router working fine as it was being used by the laptop.

Bios updated too. Thanks everyone who helped out it's appreciated. They are up and running now.

Being a Dell all the drivers will be available from the Dell website, including the network adapter

you also never need any software for a router.

Oh I know, I got the drivers from the dell website, I just had to get the network adaptor one onto my lappy as an executable, stick it on a flash and plug it in to his computer. Once I had that up and running I could fix, graphics, bios, sound, etc. Only good thing was I put in the Dell serial no and it listed the drivers for me. I can’t understand why he thought I needed to rest the router when I was using it to post here asking for advice, download stuff etc.

  • You can create a Windows password reset disk to reset your password. Follow this 5 easy steps:

    1. Enter a computer that can link to Internet. Google "windows password recovery tool 3.0". Download and install the software on that computer.

    2. Run the software and create windows password reset disk by follow the instructions.

    3. Eject the created CD/DVD and insert it into the locked computer.

    4. Reboot the locked computer (it's necessary for you to change your locked computer's BIOS setting to make it boot from CD drive) and then follow the instructions to reset your password.

    5. Now login Windows and set a new password.
