Children on the London Underground?

Someone has asked this before but it was a pre-oyster card thread, so it wasn't much use.

I'm fairly sure that children under the age of 11 travel free with an adult on the tube, but if this is true how do they get past the ticket barrier?

On page five of this TfL leaflet it says...
Please ask a member of staff to let your group
    through the gate.

Seems a bit of a hassle every time you go through a station, if you only had one child could carry them through?

    Just reporting facts.

Might struggle carrying some ten year olds. :D

If its too much of a hassle, buy the child a ticket.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound rude!

Just thinking if you only had say a four year old with you, might be easier just to carry them through.

    Thank you though :)

Not really - if the barriers are operational there has to be a manned gate so it shouldn't be any more difficult than using the barriers

What's the big deal? Just use one of the wider gates, intended for disabled, buggies etc. Just swipe your oyster on it as per normal, they deliberately stay open longer to let the less able through. Don't recall any station not having at least one of these wider barriers. You should have no hassle escorting the whole family through. I often push a fully laden buggy and drag toddles through these...

TFL probably tell you to do this, rather than use normal gates, as it would be all to easy for them to shut on a young kid, as you try and squeeze the two of you through quickly. Then who'd be moaning, if your youngster got bashed by the barriers?

    Alright relax.

I've never been on the London Underground and had no idea they had "wider barriers". I was just asking a question, Jesus.

On the gates itself there's a sign telling you to carry children under the age of 5 when you pass through.
    The man without a signature.

Seven Sisters didn't have any a couple of months ago, and they were only introduced within the last three years. All the station that do not have wide automatic barriers have wide manual barriers, or are not gated.
