i think i have a serious virus.
when i boot up my PC it goes through the usual process gets to my wallpaper with desk top icons blue screen appears very quickly then re-boots. (i cannot see what the blue screen says)
i have tried to boot up in safe mode again the system boots up but after being on for about 5 mins the pc shuts itself down.
i have tried a XP repair install but again it goes through the gathering information bit, when its about to install the files blue screen and the pc restarts.
i dont want to but i may need to format the drive.

my question is i have alot of photos on the hard drive i do not want to loose. if i buy a new hard drive and install XP can i then connect this hard drive and access the files on it?

  • Is it a pc bought from a shop or have you built it?
Have you recently done a fresh install of xp?

From personal experience,BSOD (blue screen of death) usually relates to hardware.

i built the pc myself about 3 years ago
no real issues with it, XP was running smoothly.

Me thinks i may have a trojan i did get 2 pop ups on boot up yesterday cannot remember what they were as i shut them down and ran my spyware software.
  • If I was you I'd just take it down to bare basics on the hardware side, just to be sure.
Just have 1 stick of ram installed along with your graphics card, and keyboard. And try and run safe mode.

If you were to buy a new hdd if all else failed then you need to be careful hooking your old hdd upto your new pc,otherwise you could end up back where you started.

If a Trojan has found a way on your pc,they just usually install advertisements etc,it's
