How do I close my A&L current account?

Hi, just been on the A&L website to find how to shut my old current account there. But I can't get the search bar to work on their website.

Do I need to go into branch or can I write to them to achieve this?

Thanks :)

I've researched this as I will be closing mine in the next couple of weeks. You have to phone them up (according to their website), so be ready for the anti-closure "please stay with us" tactics. Make sure you get them to confirm in writing that the account has closed. There are plenty of tales on here of people closing their A&L accounts only to find they've not been closed and they've incurred monthly £5 underfunding fees for a few months until they realise the account is still active (this is especially true if you don't receive paper statements).

Please post in this thread how you get on and what happens.

*EDIT* Sorry mate, didn't see it was you posting, thought it was another newbie who's not used to roaming these forums (more addictive than Facebook innit lol)

I've never even used the account, why I opened it, i'll never now tbh. I'm not going to ring them, they never seem to answer their phones anyway. I may just send them a letter and see what occurs.

I closed mine by writing to them. Took them a couple of weeks to pull their finger and and confirm but at least they confirmed in writing.

Did you send your card back too or didn't you bother?

Same here, by early 2011 I expect to just have

    1 Barclays Bank account
    1 Joint Barclays account
1 Credit card (hopefully Barclaycard in whatever form- I want everything in one place)
1 Back up credit card (the Cap 1 with it's mini limit will do- doesn't matter about the interest rate as it'll be paid in full every month) for card emergencies. Will be kept at home and will be useful if my wallets gets lost or stolen or the card snaps or something.

That's it. Vanquis will go as soon as I can get a replacement. Orange will go back to PAYG in November- I just don't use the phone that much. Very will be closed when the balance is paid off and A&L will be told to go %^& themselves lol.

I would also have a back up bank account somewhere, as having all products in one place can cause problems, if things go wrong in the future, not saying they will but all the same.

I do have a Halifax CardCash account with Electron card that I don't use for anything. As a basic "non-status" account I don't count it as real ;)

The OH has just raised a good question...

If we have to close the account by phone, how do we close the joint account? Do we both need to be on the line and do DPA twice?

I didn't bother - I just told them I had destroyed it (I had never even used it)
