Should I switch from Southern Electric to E-on?
I'm currently on Southern Electric's M&S Domestic Standard NSC dual fuel. Paying £46pm by direct debit for Gas and £44pm diredt debit for electric. Currently owe £80 for Gas and and £35 in credit on electric. We get 5% discount for paying by DD which off sets the 5% VAT.
In the last 6months on Gas we used: 2385kWh at 4.920p each and 5722 kWh at 2.880p each (approx).
On electric it was 468 units at 17.62p each and 1812 units at 11.51p each.
I did 2 comparisons online and both showed E-On'sSaveOnline v2 Dusl Fuel as being able to save us about £220 per year. But I dont know how true these comparisons are. The units with E-on are more expensive and there seems to be a higher threshold on initial units:
But I think the dual fuel discount is where he saving is?
If anyone can help at all I'd be very graeful.
thanks

You've put loads of figures there, but your usage is only 6 months. You will find the comparison websites are accurate, but ONLY when you input ANNUAL consumptions, then I have found them usually 100% accurate. I would say that you will probably have problems switching if you still have an outstanding balance, so get that paid off first. The big saving with Eon is, as you say, the discounts (typically d/d 6%, dual fuel 2% and online discount 17%). I am with Eon, and have had very few problems. Good luck if you decide to switch.0

As you saw, Eon's ridiculous 25% discount makes comparing unit prices unhelpful.
Note that as you are on a standard Southern Electric tariff you will probably find they have a cheaper tariff that is a similar price to Eon's and EDF's best. But a difference of more than £200 seems reasonable (I am assuming an annual useage of 150% and 200% of your six month useage.)
Note that Eon do not give you that massive discount for their final bill so when it comes to changing again that may make EDF's Online Saver 6 the better deal (since they are both the end price.)0 -

The sites allow different useage amounts: quartely monthly and annually - i went by my typical monetary spend0 -
The typical monetry spend that means you already owe over £100 :eek:The sites allow different useage amounts: quartely monthly and annually - i went by my typical monetary spend
Do the comparison based on annual consumption in kWh."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
So if I switched away E-on would not give a doscount on the final bil but EDF would? EDF do have a £50 cancellation fee though
Yes, the EDF discount is much smaller - their best price is built into the tariff (the discount is, I think, only 6%-odd and will be applied to every bill.) Agreed that there is a cancellation charge but I am assuming not everyone wants to look to switch every three or five months.
There are, of course, switching cashbacks of £40 to £62 (and more) to counter cancellation charges if the tariff setters go mad mid contract.0 -

Hi yelf
Just to confirm, Kim is spot on about no discount on final bills when changing supplier.
The only exceptions to this are where a fixed term tariff has been completed right up until the contract end date. Here, the full discount under the terms of the tariff is awarded even if this falls within a final bill. Only the part following the end date and up to the change of supply date is devoid of discount.
Please also be aware of cancellation charges. Some of our tariffs include these and you may wish to take these into account before making a decision.
