It does sound like it's already been used (although sure way to tell would be if any additional software or files were installed, internet cache wasn't empty, or registry contained links to programs no longer there; these are all 'sure signs' unlike a fragmented drive or out of date software).

Have you done as I suggested? - (a) return to another branch, (b) get in touch with head office.
  • Yes did do as you said, and they were reluctant to exchange, and wanted us to take it back to the original store. We have sent and faxed a letter off to Maplins head office today and are waiting for their reply. Thanks everyone for your advice and help, and will let you knw the outcome of this matter. One thing is for sure we wont be shopping at Maplins ever again.

I know a slow defrag doesnt mean its been used, it was so fragmented for a new model, it was unbelievable. We werent asked to register for microsoft, and we have always been asked when we have had computers before. The free antivirus was out of date, and we couldnt use it, never had that before either. The model is a Mio, you cant even get in contact with the company that makes them, because the phone line is dead.
Unfortunately neither are conclusive proof the PC has been used.
