New kind of money making techno fraud?

We have started to get random SMS messages sent to our landline from BT. The service is entirely automated and is run from an 0845 number. Essentially, and usually in the middle of the night, a message is left on the ansaphone. When you retrieve it a mechanical voice says that a voice message has been left for you. You are given three options, of which I is to listen to the message, which you invariably do. The message (which is read by a computer generated voice) is sometimes obscene, sometimes not. I got a very rude one left last night and was almost about to ring back on the number which the BT mechanical voice says it came from and complain when I twigged that this would almost certainly be a premium rate number and that I would be charged a bomb!
Am I right? Is anybody else getting these types of call?
By making the caller angry and getting them to ring back, I suspect somebody is making a packet.
