Hi , wonder if someone can help me. My daughter has a Samsung R505 laptop. It is just under a year old. We got it through the insurance company after a burglary so there is no warranty with it that we know of.
Last couple of weeks it is suddenly powering off with no warning. She runs it from the mains most times and does have a stand under it to allow air circulation. Admittedly now she is on holiday from college she has been on it quite a bit.
It will probably cost me £30 locally to get it looked at and then parts and labour on top of this. Any body got any ideas what could be wrong and how much repair should cost ?

Just because it was replaced by insurance you should still have a warranty, if you can't find the paperwork I'd contact the insurance company.0

Have you checked the heatsink for excess dust. if its blocked no amount of underside clearance will help. Also, and I know its a simple one, but is the fan actually spinning? does itspeed up and slow down or is it always very quiet?
Try downloading something like "speedfan" to see what sort of tempreture's your dealing with although be aware the temps can be very inaccurate as different software misreads themometers0 -
Fan/heatsink blocked by fluff. As dragon934 says, no amount of underside clearance will help and it'll need the fan taking out to clear the block of fluff between the fan and the heatsink - blasting compressed air through it will do nothing at best or block the fan with a wad of fluff at worst.0
