esa income or contribution related

I saw another thread and someone mentioned that when you go from Incapacity Benefit to the new ESA it will change from contribution based to income based. Does anyone know if this is true and refer to where I can read this,as it would make a difference to my situation? Thanks

No, its not true, you cant be forced to claim the Income Related part of the benefit.

IB only cases will be ESA(C) cases.

What about if when you first claimed IB it was under the Youth rules? Would be ESA (IB) surely?

ESA(Y) is a wholly contributory benefit so I am not sure why you say it would 'surely' be ESA(IB).

Just that the Youth rules bypass the usual qualifying criteria ie NI credits as your contribution.

As the OP said, any source information would be helpful. I think at the moment it's guess work as i've heard that it'll be C or IB stated with equal certainty.

Thanks for your response you say one can't be forced to claim the income related part of the benefit, does that mean that the benefit will be either income or contribution or does it mean that there is an element within the Benefit which is income related?

Under the IB>ESA migration, if you pass the ESA medical and score 15 points you will transfer as follows-
    IB>ESA(C)
    IBY>ESAY
    IS>ESA(IB)
    IB and IS>ESA(C) and (IB)

    Thanks Stazi.

I have no idea what they will put me on (first claimed IS, then IB under Youth rules, am 23 now) I will have to wait and see. Hoping for IB so I can get free prescriptions and more council tax discount for Mum.

If your are on IBY now, then you will transfer to ESAY if you pass the ESA medical and score 15 points.

Just to add to this question, does anyone know first if I can choose either income or contribution and what if any are the benefits and drawbacks of each. A link would be great. Thanks
