It seems so as everything apparanlty is refered back to her for approval yet they only just tollerate her as she causes arguments. Apparantly she half owns the house with the van man (her son I think).

    Thanks :)

Simple, park your car in front of your house, first whiff of a complaint from them say fair enough I will look for an alternative.

The alternative is take down the fence that you own. Do not ask, do not delay, just rip it down and use your garage. (or if it was me I would just do this first then park in the street;))

I'm struggling to picture the scene here. You're saying that you have a drive that ISN'T shared with your neighbour, ie you have a drive each that just happen to be side by side? But that neither of the drives are wide enough to drive a car down? That seems very odd indeed. I would argue that if you cannot fit the width of a vehicle down them then they aren't drives, they are paths which for some reason a complete idiot has built a garage at the end of.

You also say that you have space in front of your house where you have gravel, is this anywhere near the drive?
And you also have a caravan. Sounds to me like you've got plenty of parking space, a caravan and a car on the drive is pretty good going and your neighbour doesn't have 5 cars and a van, they have 3 cars and one van, the other two are visitors or are only there a minority of the time and aren't really permanent residents at all.

You mention this fence and I really don't understand what you're trying to say or what benefit there would be to removing it. Surely if you took it down then you'd only be able to get your car to your garage by going on the neighbours drive which would mean your neighbours and yourself couldnt park on your drives at all as doing so would block the garages off completely. You wouldn't gain any parking space at all would you?

Any chance of some kind of photo to show us what you actually mean? Maybe a screenshot of a google earth type overhead view?

Actually its quite common in houses built from the early 30's to the 80's. You would fit a car up to the late 1980's down such a drive but not a modern one. For example, my Ford Capri was standard width for the time. It was over 1ft narrower than my MK3 Mondeo.

Park on the road instead so you can safely pull out and don't have the hassle of getting in and out of your driveway. If this is taking up one of their usual spaces you get bonus points. That or move house :)
  • It is quite common for 1930s houses to have narrow drives. It is frustrating when people have more cars than they can drive at any one time and don't park them off road and parking is tight.

I don't have a helpful suggestion, just sympathy! Its part of the "whats your problem" culture.

All I can suggest is that you tell them you are struggling to park and gain access to and from your drive and if there's no change then your fence is coming down.

I suppose they could then build their own if they wanted to be funny about it but maybe you can then report it for blocking access to your garage.

It sounds as if they aren't the friendliest of neighbours really so its not like you have much to lose.
