Normally I run a mile from anyone who wants to offer me insurance on an appliance, however, I thought this sounded ok....

stick to your guns! Don't be fooled as it's still £48 a year - about 25% of the cost of the appliance!
Appliance insurance is one of the biggest rip off of insurance out there. Compare to buildings insurance which seems a far better deal: rebuild cost of your house is probably £100k or more. If you pay about £10 a month for buildings insurance cover - that's a mere 0.12% of the rebuild cost and a far better deal!
Self-insure...put the £48 a year in the bank and in just over 4 years you have the money to replace it if need be with no conditions attached (other than they you haven't spent the money already!!!).0
