Hi i have a new computer and i just wondered should i be shutting it down and turning it off at the mains at night. I use to do this with my old one and im thinking is it a bad thing to do does it effect the computers performance?

Thanks

i'd turn it off and unplug , particularly if you do not use a surge protected socket

Not at all, why would it be a bad thing?

IF you're not going to be using it overnight then shutting it down (or hibernating) is the best thing to do. If it's for a shorter period or time then putting it to sleep might be a better idea.

Makes no difference whether you do or don't other than the CMOS backup battery will go flat quicker if you do but as we're talking years for it to go flat and they're a 99p watch battery, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
