FLAC limits you straight away. You're probably best looking into which players will run on Rockbox. My iRiver H340 is still going strong, on its third battery.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

I was using FLAC as an indicator of the capacity required, approx 40gb

Well what format do you need it to play? Is it 40GB of flac, or 4GB of MP3/OGG/whatever? There's quite a difference. You need to decide what you want before anyone can help you, but like I said, look at the players supported by Rockbox.

    large capacity

the format of the audio dosnt matter, as long as I can fit on 150+ cd albums in decent quality, so that they still sound like the cd.
on the basis that FLAC would be compressing up to 50%, a capacity of 40gb+ would do

how much music do you fit on a H340?

Depends how long the albums are. Looking at MP3, are we talking 78 minute (108MB, 1.4MB/minute) Mogwai albums or 45 minute (82MB, 1.8MB/minute) Malcolm Middleton albums?

Those are both LAME's V2 preset, but if you want top quality in a sensible filesize you're wanting V0 so you can probably add 20% onto those sizes. You're looking at 2MB/sec on average for MP3 in a quality that'll be practically indiscernable to CD.

If you decide to use FLAC, you'll be looking at several times that. An album I'm looking at here is 360MB at 55 minutes long. 6.5MB/sec. FLAC is variable bitrate so YMMV.
