Cabbages take a while to form the solid centres; but they do eventually.

It is surprising how big the outside leaves are though isn't it? (Hence the need for the planting distances given.) So much of a vegetable is removed to make the sanitised product that many people want to buy. I remember an educated friend of mine not recognising a sprout plant in a photo. When I laughed and asked her if she thought they all grew individually like little cabbages, she said she hadn't given it much thought.
